DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INVENTORY
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
The Domestic Violence Inventory
(DVI) is designed for domestic violence offender (male and female)
assessment. The DVI evaluates violence (lethality) potential,
assesses control issues, quantifies substance (alcohol and other drugs)
abuse and measures stress coping abilities.
The DVI has 155 items and takes
30 minutes to complete. The DVI contains six measures (scales):
1. Truthfulness Scale,
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale,
3. Control Scale,
4. Alcohol Scale,
5. Drugs Scale and
6. Stress Coping Abilities Scale.
The DVI is appropriate for use
with both misdemeanor and felony cases. The DVI is used in courts,
probation treatment, community corrections, clinics, counseling
centers and department settings.
Why use the Domestic Violence Inventory (DVI)?
Reasons for using the DVI are many and include the
DVI's superior reliability, validity and accuracy. Computer
scoring and printing of on-site reports is fast and accurate. DVI
scales (measures) represent major domestic violence offender
criminogenic needs, which are necessary for accurate recidivism
prediction. The DVI contains a Truthfulness Scale that determines
whether or not the offender was minimizing problems or lying while
completing the test. And the DVI has one of the largest databases
(over 60,000) of test data which facilitates ongoing research. The
cumulative database enables the provision (at no added cost) of annual
testing program summary reports. Moreover the DVI is one of the
very few tests designed specifically for domestic violence offender
assessment.
SIX DVI
SCALES (MEASURES)
|
1.
Truthfulness Scale: Measures truthfulness of client while
being tested. Denial and attempts to fake good are identified.
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale: Identifies
dangerous and potentially lethal people. Measures the use of force to
injure, damage or destroy.
3. Alcohol Scale:
Measures the severity of alcohol (beer, wine and other liquors) use
and abuse.
|
|
4.
Drugs Scale:
Measures drug use and the severity of abuse. Drugs refer
to pot, crack, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates, heroin, etc.
5. Control Scale:
Measures a persons need to control others. Controlling behaviors
include intimidation, hitting and battering.
6.
Stress Coping Abilities Scale: Measures the offenders
ability to cope with stress and pressure. We now know that stress
exacerbates symptoms of emotional and mental health problems. This
scale is a non-introversive way of identifying the presence of
established mental health and emotional problems. |
Confidentiality: Risk &
Needs encourages test users to delete
offender names from diskettes before they are returned to Risk & Needs. Once client names
are deleted, they are gone and cannot be retrieved. Deleting client names does not
delete demographics or test data, which is downloaded into the DVI
database for subsequent analysis. This proprietary name deletion
procedure involves a few keystrokes and insures client confidentiality
and compliance with HIPAA (federal regulation 45 C.F.R. 164.501)
requirements.

Few tests have been designed
specifically for assessment of domestic violence offenders. The
Domestic Violence Inventory (DVI) is one and the DVI-Short Form is
another. The DVI-Short Form was developed from the DVI and is
appropriate for adult misdemeanor and felony domestic violence cases.
This webpage discusses the DVI-Short Form.
Sometimes offender
characteristics (motivation, reading ability and compliance), the
assessment milieu or setting (court, probation, corrections, counseling
or treatment) or the purpose of the evaluation call for shorter test
administration. In these domestic violence offender settings we
recommend consideration of the DVI-Short Form.
The DVI-Short Form is a brief,
easily administered and automated (computer scored) adult domestic
violence offender test. The DVI-Short Form consists of 76 items
and takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. It has six measures or
scales:
1. Truthfulness Scale,
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale,
3. Alcohol Scale,
4. Drugs Scale,
5. Control Scale and
6. Stress Coping Abilities Scale.
The DVI-Short Form evolved from the Domestic Violence Inventory (DVI).
Why use the DVI-Short Form? Aside from
its impressive reliability, validity and accuracy, the DVI-Short Form
scales correlate very highly with comparable DVI Scales. The
DVI-Short Form also has all of the DVI's desirable features like the
Truthfulness Scale, criminogenic needs scales, expanding database, etc.
The DVI-Short Form is also one of the very few tests designed
specifically for domestic violence offender assessment. Reasons
for using the DVI-Short Form are many and include: reading
impaired assessment, testing in high volume programs, time constraints
and it is available as an alternative retest. Indeed, the
DVI-Short Form is one of the few tests designed specifically for
domestic violence offender assessment.
SIX
DVI-SHORT FORM SCALES
|
1. Truthfulness Scale:
Measures how open and truthful the offender was when tested.
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale:
Measures use of force to injure, damage or destroy. Identifies
dangerous people.
3. Alcohol Scale:
Measures the
severity of alcohol use and abuse. |
|
4.
Drugs Scale:
Measures the severity of illicit drug use and abuse.
5. Control Scale:
Measures a persons need to control others. Controlling behaviors
include intimidation, hitting and battering.
6. Stress Coping
Abilities Scale: Measures the offenders ability to handle
or cope with stress. |

The DVI-Juvenile is designed
for juvenile domestic violence offender assessment. It consists of 149
items, takes 30 minutes to complete and it has six scales (measures):
1. Truthfulness Scale,
2. Alcohol Scale,
3. Control Scale,
4. Drugs Scale,
5. Violence (Lethality) Scale and
6. Stress Coping Abilities Scale.
The DVI-Juvenile evolved from
the Domestic Violence Inventory (DVI) and is standardized on juvenile
offenders. The DVI-Juvenile can be used in misdemeanor and felony
cases. The DVI-Juvenile is available in English and Spanish.
The DVI-Juvenile is used in
court, probation, community corrections, clinics, counseling centers and
treatment settings.
Why Use the DVI-Juvenile? Aside from its very impressive
reliability, validity and accuracy, the DVI-Juvenile is one of the
very few tests designed specifically for juvenile domestic violence
offenders. The DVI-Juvenile test is standardized on thousands of
juvenile domestic violence offenders. The Domestic Violence
Inventory (DVI) was modified from adult to juvenile testing.
Although the six scales (measures) stayed the same, item contents,
reading level and phraseology was changed to be appropriate for
juveniles ranging in age from 15 to 18 years. The DVI-Juvenile has
all of the Domestic Violence Inventories unique features. It also
has an expanding database that exceeds 30 thousand juvenile offenders.
SIX
DVI-JUVENILE SCALES (MEASURES) |
1. Truthfulness Scale:
Measures how truthful the youth was while completing the test.
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale:
Identifies youths that are a danger to themselves and others.
3. Alcohol Scale:
Measures the severity of the offenders alcohol use and abuse.
|
|
4.
Drugs Scale:
Measures the severity of the offenders Illicit drug
use or abuse.
5. Control Scale:
Measures a youth's need to control others.
6. Stress Coping
Abilities Scale: Measures an offenders ability to handle or
cope with stress. We now know that stress exacerbates mental
health and emotional problem symtomatology. This scale is a
non-introversive way to screen for established (diagnosable) emotional
and mental health problems. |
Confidentiality: Risk &
Needs encourages test users to delete

The DVI
Pre-Post is a test designed for assessing counseling and treatment
outcome or effectiveness. The same test is given
before and after treatment and upon posttest, it automatically
compares pretest and posttest results.
The DVI Pre-Post has 147 items,
takes 30 minutes to complete and tests are scored on-site with reports
printed in 2 1/2 minutes.
The DVI Pre-Post has six scales
(measures):
1. Truthfulness Scale,
2. Violence (Lethality)
Scale,
3. Control Scale,
4. Alcohol Scale,
5. Drugs Scale,
6. Stress Coping Abilities Scale.
This is a pretest-posttest procedure that automatically compares
pretest-posttest scores. If you want to know if counseling or
treatment was effective you should consider the DVI Pre-Post.
Why Use the DVI Pre-Post? Courts, probation departments,
treatment agencies and other professionals are becoming very interested
in the effectiveness of domestic violence offender intervention,
counseling and treatment. There are few outcome tests and even
fewer in the domestic violence field. The question becomes after
counseling or treatment "has the client changed for the better, for the
worse or stayed the same?" The DVI Pre-Post is administered upon
program entry (pretest) and again after program completion (posttest).
Pretest and posttest scale scores are then compared in the automated
(computerized) scoring process and the results are printed in the DVI
Pre-Post report within 2 1/2 minutes of test data entry. Posttest
scores are compared to pretest scores and these results are printed in
the objectively scored DVI Pre-Post report.

SIX DVI PRE-POST SCALES (MEASURES)
|
1. Truthfulness Scale:
Measures how truthful the client was when tested.
2. Violence (Lethality) Scale:
This scale identifies people that are a danger to themselves or
others.
3. Alcohol Scale:
Measures the severity of alcohol use and abuse. Alcohol refers
to beer, wine and other liquors.
|
|
4.
Drugs Scale:
Measures the severity of drug use and abuse. Illicit drugs
like pot, crack, cocaine, amphetamines, barbiturates, heroin, etc. are
screened.
5. Control Scale:
Measures a persons need to control others. Controlling behaviors
include intimidation, hitting and battering.
6. Stress Coping
Abilities Scale: Measures the offenders ability to handle
or cope with stress. |

DVI
PRE-POST EXAMPLE REPORT
EXAMPLE
OF DVI COMPARISON REPORT
There are three DVI Pre-Post reports (Pretest, Posttest and
Comparison).
The DVI Pretest and DVI Posttest reports are the
same except for their name. For purposes of this website, the comparison
report is the only report presented. Visitors interested in viewing the
DVI Pre-Test report or the DVI Post-Test report may do so by visiting the Risk &
Needs Assessment, Inc. website by clicking on
www.riskandneeds.com link, then click on the Tests Alphabetically
Listed link and scroll down to the DVI Pre-Post.
Click on the test name and you will go directly to the DVI Pre-Post webpage.
The three example reports are located at the bottom of the webpage.
The DVI Pre-Post is an objective and standardized
outcome test. It
incorporates empirically based scales and objectively based outcome
measures. The Pretest is the standard against which all subsequent Posttests are compared.
The
Comparison Report is generated when
the Posttest is administered. By definition, Posttest is after Pretest
administration. It is the Comparison Report that compares Pretest and Posttest scores.
The
first page of the Comparison Report begins with
the client's name and some basic demographics. The DVI Pre-Post Comparison Index is presented.
This index is the difference between the client's Pretest score and that
client's comparable Posttest score for the Truthfulness Scale, Alcohol
Scale, Control Scale, Drugs Scale, Violence Scale and Stress Coping
Abilities Scale. Each paragraph gives the client's Pretest and Posttest
scale score, the comparison score (Pretest minus Posttest) and an
explanation of what these comparison scores mean.

The DVI Pre-Post report directly compares
pretest scale scores with
analogous posttest scale scores.
DVI Pre-Post Comparison Index
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Explanation: DVI Pre-Post Comparison Index
is the difference score
(pretest score minus posttest score)
for each DVI Pre-Post scale. When
the pretest score is higher than the
posttest score, this index is
positive and indicates improvement.
When the index is negative the pre-
test score is lower than the posttest
score which signifies that the
client is more at-risk now than at the
pretest period.
1. TRUTHFULNESS SCALE: Pretest:
33; Posttest: 20 Comparison: +13
Comparison of the Truthfulness Scale
pretest - posttest scores reveals
some improvement, in that this person's
posttest scale score is lower
than their pretest score.
However, their pretest score was at or below
the 69th percentile, consequently there
may have been little room for
improvement.
2. ALCOHOL SCALE: Pretest: 68;
Posttest: 70
Comparison: -2
Comparison of the Alcohol
Scale pretest - posttest scores reveals
slight deterioration. The
posttest score is slightly higher than the
pretest score which indicates little,
if any, meaningful change over
the pretest - posttest interval.
3. CONTROL SCALE: Pretest:
99; Posttest: 84
Comparison: +15
Moderate or average Control Scale score
improvement over the pretest -
posttest interval is evidenced.
This client's posttest scale score is
lower than their pretest score.
Improvement in the posttest risk range
score is noted.
4. DRUGS SCALE: Pretest:
29; Posttest: 29
Comparison: 0
Little, if any change is
apparent when the Drugs Scale pretest -
posttest scores are compared.
Since the pretest score was at or below
the 69th percentile there may not have
been a lot of room for change
or improvement. The lower the
pretest score the more impressive this
posttest score is.
5. VIOLENCE SCALE: Pretest:
92; Posttest: 57
Comparison: +35
Comparison of Violence Scale pretest -
posttest scores shows solid and
substantial improvement.
This person's posttest scale score
is
substantially lower than their pretest
scale score.
6. STRESS COPING SCALE:
Pretest: 89; Posttest: 72 Comparison: +17
Moderate or average Stress Coping
Scale score improvement over the
pretest - posttest interval is
evidenced. This client's posttest scale
score is lower than their pretest
score. Improvement in the posttest
risk range score is noted. |
|
The
second page of the Comparison
Report provides "Significant Item Comparisons" (direct admissions or
unusual answers) between the Pretest and Posttest reports on all of the
DVI Pre-Post scales. Similarly, Pretest and Posttest answers are
reproduced. This facilitates specific item comparisons, when desired.

Administration of the DVI-Pretest and DVI-Posttest
results in an outcome report. The
client's pretest scores are compared to their posttest scores and the
COMPARISON REPORT is then generated.
Sometimes this "outcome concept" can be difficult to understand. The
DVI Pre-Post is discussed in more detail in Risk & Needs Assessment
website
www.riskandneeds.com. Or you can contact Risk & Needs Assessment, Inc.
for more information. Our telephone number is (602)234-3506, our fax
